Veterans Day
I would like to thank the men and women who served our Country and the families who sacrificed and persevered while their loved ones were enlisted.
![]() ![]() My Daddy, US Air Force Cotton picker spindles saluting the Flag
The smell of defoliant had long drifted by now and John Deeres were picking cotton full speed before the rain. Jumping & playing in the cotton trailer, adventure picnicking on the turn row when Mama brought food to all, watching in amazement of how the gin hose sucked the cotton and proud to run into the office to pick up the little ticket, and seeing little puffs of white Delta snow along the side of the roads … the innocent memory of a child growing up in the Delta. It will always have a special place in my heart.
Optimistically onward,
Allison

Another positive about using native plants in your landscapes is their resilience to drought, flood, extreme hot and extreme cold. No need to cover, no fertilizing or pre-emergent poisons, and very little need to provide additional water.
Mulch, Mulch, Mulch. Whether you prefer hard wood, bark or pine straw, or you are using your trees’ leaves (please do!), all of these are excellent choices. It’s normal for most plants to enter into a dormant period during winter, a time of plant and animal stress. This is also peak tree planting season.
Never prune around freezing times, as it allows pathogens and pests to enter your stressed plant and the new green shoots that form after pruning are especially vulnerable to the cold.
Frostweed (Verbesina virginica) is blooming white everywhere right now. It is one of our most interesting native plants, providing many butterflies, birds and bees with overwintering sources of food. Deer avoid it. It forms fascinating ribbon-like frosty ice sculptures from their stems’ base.
