Easter Egg Hunt a Huge Success
Posted on Apr 24th, 2025
On Saturday April 18th, hundreds of people showed up for the Lake Caroline Easter Egg Hunt. Peter Cottontail kicked off the activities with his arrival. After entering the Park in the "Bunny Buggy," the Easter Bunny hopped around greeting children and adults alike.

Next came the Egg Hunt itself.  Children were divided into age groups so bigger kids did not overwhelm younger ones - and to give parents a chance to watch all their children dash after eggs. When the "Go" was given, these kids were like human vacuum cleaners. Within minutes, nearly 6,000 brightly colored, candy-filled eggs stuffed were scooped up into eager hands and Easter baskets.

After the hunt, Peter Cottontail settled in for pictures with children of all ages. The Park was filled with Easter decorations. Friends and neighbors gathered around to socialize and enjoy watching children experience their "loot."

Activities such as this only happen with the commitment of many people. A huge thanks goes out to the volunteers, who for two weekends prior to the event, worked to spiff up the Park. The maintenance crew picked up limbs and sprayed the ant hills on Thursday before the event. Many people donated eggs and while most of these were stuffed, volunteers worked to stuff the remaining eggs with candy. Finally, Kudos to all who attended. The Park was left in excellent condition.

It’s moments like this that remind us how special the Lake Caroline community really is.

Hummingbird Book Club
Posted on Apr 24th, 2025
Mississippi Mud was an intriguing true life tale of a Biloxi murder in the 1980s. The third person recreation of the crime and investigation challenged, but in no way inhibited, our usual rowdy discussion of the book, characters, and events. As law abiding Lake Caroline residents, we were amazed that so many lucrative and murderous transactions could occur ‘inside’ the big house of Angola prison. Also, it was phenomenal how many members knew these real life characters through friends, church and work. Small world. Another good selection.

Nutria -Friend or Foe
Posted on Apr 24th, 2025
We would like to thank resident, Perry Egger, for this useful information on a Nutria.  He has included a few articles and pieces of information that would be worth the time to review if you are a homeowner with a seawall. The damage these animals can cause can be extensive and very expensive. They also carry a number of bacteria and disease.

Perry Egger:
We saw our first Nutria about 6 months ago sitting on our sea wall eating the cracked corn we put out for ducks.  About the same time, one of our neighbors started putting out commercial made duck food and whole corn. Over the last month, I have trapped and / or disposed of 5 adult nutria. It should be noted that they are considered as invasive as wild pigs because they can have litters of 5-10 babies up to 3 times a year and can reproduce at 6-9 months post birth.

This is not unique to Lake Caroline as they have the same issue at Lake Lorman and Lake Cavelier.  A friend put it very simply, if you feed the ducks, you are going to see nutria and if they hang around they will cause damage to your banks and/or seawalls as they burrow to create dens and to find their preferred food source which are root systems. If you feed the ducks with corn, they will come eat and then look for more options.

They are not easy to trap but we have been somewhat successful with a live trap using carrots, lettuce and sweet potatoes. Because they burrow in, once they find food, they are unlikely to leave, meaning if you don't take action they will always hang around and eventually cause damage. If you do trap, you must dispose of them, otherwise it is just a Band-Aid. You cannot relocate them and expect to never see them again.

There is a tremendous amount of information available.  If you own a lot on the lake, you need to be very aware of these animals and develop a plan to address their threat.  Here are the articles to get you started.
